Sterilisation Programme
Our sterilisation Programme
The Animal Wellness Trust is committed to controlling the stray dog population. We’ve successfully sterilised over 1,000 strays in Colombo, helping reduce overpopulation and prevent disease. We’ve also sterilised all the dogs at our shelter to ensure responsible care.
In Bandaragama, we’ve sterilised 150 local dogs, supporting the community in managing their pets and preventing unwanted litters. These efforts play a crucial role in improving the health and well-being of animals in both urban and rural areas.
Our sterilisation programme is a key part of our mission to create a sustainable future for dogs across Colombo, Bandaragama, and beyond.

Why sterilisation is important?
Sterilisation is a compassionate way to help reduce the stray dog population. By spaying and neutering, we prevent the birth of unwanted puppies, which helps reduce the number of dogs living on the streets. This not only eases the pressure on overcrowded shelters but also prevents unnecessary suffering by limiting the spread of diseases and ensuring that fewer animals are left to struggle for food and care.
Sterilisation promotes the overall well-being of dogs, giving them healthier lives and better chances for adoption. It’s a humane and sustainable solution that helps create a safer environment for both animals and the communities they live in.
