WHAT
WE DO
At the Animal Wellness Trust, we are committed to rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing abandoned street dogs and cats in Sri Lanka. Our mission includes providing shelter, veterinary care, and the promotion of humane population control through spaying and neutering. We work to educate the community about the benefits of animal companionship and aim to provide these animals with loving, permanent homes. Through our efforts, we not only improve the lives of individual animals but also contribute to a greater understanding of animal welfare in the region.
PROGRAMS & PROJECTS
Our programmes and projects focus on rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing street dogs and cats, while promoting responsible pet ownership through education and spaying/neutering initiatives. We also offer veterinary care and shelter for animals in need. We do this to reduce animal suffering, control overpopulation, and ensure that every animal has the chance to live a healthy and happy life, contributing to a more compassionate community.
Elephant Conservation
The exploitation of these animals continues even though the global elephant population is dwindling fast. Currently, less than 7,000 elephants remain in Sri Lanka, and their numbers in Asia have fallen so alarmingly that they are now on the endangered list.
Vaccination Programmes
The Animal Wellness Trust is committed to protecting dogs through essential vaccination programmes. By vaccinating against diseases like rabies and parvovirus, we help safeguard their health and reduce the risk of disease transmission to humans and other animals, contributing to a healthier community for all.
Sterilisation Programmes
The Animal Wellness Trust’s sterilisation programmes are crucial in controlling the stray dog population. By neutering and spaying, we help prevent overpopulation, ensuring fewer stray dogs on the streets. This contributes to a more sustainable and manageable community for both animals and people.
Feeding The Community
The Animal Wellness Trust regularly conducts community feeding programmes in Bandaragama to support local stray animals. These efforts provide much-needed food to hungry dogs and cats, ensuring they receive nourishment and care. Our community feeds help improve the wellbeing of strays and raise awareness about animal welfare in the area.
Enrichment For Animals
At our shelter, we believe every dog deserves more than just safety — they deserve happiness, stimulation, and love. Each day, we provide enriching activities that bring comfort and excitement to their lives. From playful interactions and treat-scatter games to hide-and-seek challenges that spark curiosity, these moments help keep their minds sharp and their spirits bright. We also take different dogs on beach outings daily, giving them the freedom to run, explore, and simply enjoy being a dog. Through play, exploration, and care, we help our dogs heal, grow, and rediscover joy.
